Apply to serve as a Trustee of FAIR
FAIR is establishing itself as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. We are seeking founding Trustees to lead the organisation through its first years of operation.
01 · About the role
Trustees are the founding governing body of FAIR and bear the legal duties associated with charitable trusteeship under the Charities Act 2011. Together, the Trustees set FAIR’s strategic direction, exercise oversight of management and finances, ensure compliance with charity law and regulatory obligations, and act at all times in furtherance of FAIR’s charitable purposes.
FAIR’s charitable purposes include the advancement of education in the field of artificial intelligence governance, the advancement of human rights in the context of automated decision making, and the promotion of public benefit through evidence-based research and policy engagement.
02 · What we are looking for
We seek individuals of standing in their respective fields who can contribute meaningfully to FAIR’s governance and to the credibility of the organisation in its engagement with Parliament, government, regulators, and the public. Particular areas of relevant expertise include:
- Law , constitutional, regulatory, intellectual property, data protection, human rights, charity law
- Public policy and parliamentary affairs
- Academia, particularly in artificial intelligence, ethics, and computer science
- Technology, with experience in AI development, deployment, or auditing
- Senior leadership in the public sector, including the NHS, education, or law enforcement
- Charity governance, finance, fundraising, or risk management
A diversity of background, perspective, and experience is essential to good governance. We particularly welcome applications from those underrepresented on UK charity boards.
03 · Time commitment
Founding Trustees should expect to commit, on average, approximately one day per month, distributed across:
- Quarterly Board meetings (in person where practicable, or via secure videoconference)
- Sub committee or working group participation according to expertise
- Reading of papers and correspondence between meetings
- Occasional ad hoc consultation on policy positions and parliamentary submissions
The role is unremunerated, in keeping with the Charity Commission’s general expectation regarding charity trustees. Reasonable expenses are reimbursable in accordance with FAIR’s expenses policy.
04 · Eligibility
To serve as a Trustee, an applicant must be 16 years of age or over and must not be disqualified under the Charities Act 2011. Persons disqualified from acting as a charity trustee include, among others, those who:
- Have an unspent conviction for an offence involving dishonesty, deception, terrorism, money laundering, bribery, perversion of the course of justice, or perjury
- Are an undischarged bankrupt, or are subject to an Individual Voluntary Arrangement, Debt Relief Order, or moratorium under the Insolvency Act 1986
- Have been removed from trusteeship of any charity by the Charity Commission, the Court of Session, the High Court, or the Secretary of State
- Are disqualified from acting as a company director under the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986
- Are subject to a notification requirement under the Sexual Offences Act 2003

05 · Submit your application
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis by the Founder. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a brief interview before any formal appointment. All information provided is treated in confidence and processed in accordance with our privacy practices.
