Built to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability.
The Foundation for Artificial Intelligence Rights (FAIR) exists to defend the British public in the age of AI.
Why we exist
AI is already woven into daily life, sometimes openly, often without us realising. Deployed at this pace, without proper checks, it can entrench bias, erode rights and concentrate power in fewer and fewer hands. The Foundation is the central point that holds that line: surfacing where AI is being used, shaping the rules that govern it, and equipping people to navigate it on their own terms.
What we do
Every objective is delivered through projects, and every project has a lead. Our work runs on three fronts.
- Make public-sector AI visible to the public. When the state adopts AI, the public deserves to know. We maintain AI Alerts, a live register of confirmed contracts, partnerships, memoranda of understanding and pilots involving United Kingdom public bodies. Scanned every day. Every entry sourced.
- Shape fair rules for AI on the public’s behalf. The rules being written now will shape how AI touches everyday life for decades. We work inside the legislative process, briefing parliamentarians, responding to consultations, and publishing briefings on the questions where the evidence is clearest and the public interest is strongest.
- Equip people of every age to understand and use AI. No one should be left behind by a technology this powerful. We deliver free, plain-language learning resources and a public helpdesk, so that people understand what AI is, how it affects them, and how to make it work for them.
Independence
The Foundation is independent of Government, of any political party, and of the artificial intelligence industry. We do not accept funding from sources whose interests would compromise that independence, and every submission we make carries an explicit independence and conflicts-of-interest statement. Our position on political activity is set out in our Charitable Purposes.
Charitable status
The Foundation is in the process of registering as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Until registration is granted, we operate as a not-for-profit working group and cannot accept Gift Aid. Our governing documents, theory of change, and the policies that will sit alongside registration are published on our Reports and Publications page.
Governance
The Foundation will be governed by a Board of Trustees drawn from law, technology, public policy and civil society. We are building that Board now, and we welcome expressions of interest from people with relevant expertise. If that is you, see join the Board.
The founder
The Foundation was established by Scott McCulloch. You can read more about his background and the research that led to the Foundation on the founder page.
